Police in Scotland are investigating allegations of inappropriate behaviour against Cammy Day, leader of Edinburgh City Council. Daily Record newspaper claims that Day “bombarded Ukrainian refugees” with messages, asking them sexually explicit questions, attempting to meet them for wine dates, and complimenting their looks. The newspaper spoke to two refugees who were unable to ignore his unsolicited approaches due to his position in the council. Edinburgh City Council’s procedures have been followed “in consultation [with] our independent whistleblowing service, Safecall,” said a council spokesperson, while Scottish Labour confirmed that Day was suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said the allegations were “deeply distressing,” adding that the party became aware of them on Saturday and suspended Day promptly. It is left to police and the council to decide if further investigation is necessary. Day has led the council since May 2022, but now opposition politicians are calling for his immediate resignation. SNP leader Cllr Simita Kumar posted on social media calling for his resignation, with leaders of Liberal Democrat and Conservative groups making similar calls.
Police Scotland is still investigating the matter to understand the full circumstances. The Labour Party condemns all such complaints and fully investigates them in line with party rules, said a spokeswoman. The whistleblowing service Safecall was activated after the allegations, and all matters were raised with the chief executive and monitoring officer, said a council spokesperson. So far, no news on the progress of the investigation has been released by police.
