This coming weekend, the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris will be reopening, and the Prince of Wales has been announced as a guest. Prince William will attend the celebration on behalf of the United Kingdom at the request of His Majesty’s Government. The cathedral was damaged by fire five years ago, with the restoration finally complete. Joining Prince William will be key world leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and US President-elect Donald Trump.
When the fire occurred in 2019, the Notre-Dame cathedral suffered devastating damage, including the destruction of stained-glass windows and wooden interiors, and the spire collapsed. However, the main structure was saved, along with both bell towers. This led to an ambitious reconstruction project, which cost a reported €700m (£582m) and included the work of around 2,000 experts.
The French culture ministry reported that millions of euros had been raised or pledged for the work on the cathedral, which was one of the most extensive reconstruction projects of its kind. The restoration included not only the repair but also the cleaning of centuries’ worth of dust and soot caused by the fire. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron visited the site on live TV ahead of its official opening, saying that the craftspeople who had worked on the project were the remedy to the wound caused by the Notre-Dame blaze.
Prince William last visited Paris in 2017 together with his wife Catherine, the Princess of Wales, for a two-day trip. The reopening will feature the reawakening of the cathedral’s thunderous organ, the opening of its massive doors, and the first Mass in a weekend-long celebration. According to the cathedral’s rector, tickets for the first week of Masses in the restored church sold out in just 25 minutes
