Lord Rami Ranger, a Conservative peer and donor, has had his CBE stripped in a decision made by the Forfeiture Committee. This decision was made after the Lords standards watchdog found him guilty of bullying and harassing a journalist on social media. Social media posts made by Lord Ranger about the Sikh and Pakistani communities were also considered. Ranger said he was “devastated” by the decision and intends to challenge it through legal channels.
A notice in the London Gazette confirmed that Lord Ranger’s honour had been “cancelled and annulled”. He had received his CBE in 2016 for services to business and community cohesion. He was made a peer in Theresa May’s resignation honours in 2019. Despite this, Lord Ranger was suspended from the Conservative parliamentary party following the Lords commissioner for standards report last year. He was readmitted in November after issuing an apology.
Lord Ranger has donated approximately £1.5 million to the Conservative Party since 2009. A spokesperson for the peer stated that he had neither committed a crime nor broken a law. They argued that the decision would encourage frivolous complaints against others that would hurt people’s fundamental rights to free speech and thought.
Honours can be removed on the advice of the Forfeiture Committee and with the approval of the King. A person’s honours can be taken away if they are found guilty of a criminal offense, behavior which results in censure by a regulatory or professional body, or if their conduct is considered to bring the honours system into disrepute. The Conservative Party has yet to comment
