Tim Westwood: BBC pauses report publication after Met request


The Metropolitan Police has requested a pause in the publication of the BBC’s report into former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood’s alleged behaviour. The report, led by Gemma White KC, was ordered by the BBC to investigate Westwood’s time at the broadcaster after 18 women accused him of predatory and unwanted sexual behaviour and touching in 2022. Westwood has denied any wrongdoing.

According to a statement from Metropolitan Police, consultation is ongoing with the Crown Prosecution Service, and the police have asked the BBC to pause the publication of the report. They said, “we must continue to ensure that any steps we take […] do not negatively impact any criminal process.” The police have interviewed Westwood under caution four times since the allegations were made.

The BBC confirmed it would comply with the request, adding that it would update the public when it had further clarity. The broadcaster has spent over £3 million on the review thus far, according to a Freedom of Information request by BBC News earlier this year.

Westwood, 67, has continued to play gigs across the UK and West Africa despite calls from campaigners for nightclubs to stop hosting him. He stepped down from his Capital Xtra radio show in 2022. The alleged incidents are reported to have taken place between 1982 and 2016.

The Met police confirmed it had submitted a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service but is continuing to investigate the complex and sensitive matter. “Our absolute priority is to maintain the integrity of our investigation and support and retain the confidence of potential victims,” a spokesperson said
