Kate's carol service message: You were by my side

On Friday, Catherine, Princess of Wales will host her annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey in her biggest event since returning to royal duties after ending chemotherapy. The Order of Service, which embodies the service’s themes of kindness, love and empathy, will feature a specially-designed illustration by British artist Charlie Mackesy. Families affected by the Southport knife attack will be among the attendees, alongside 1,600 guests.

The illustration for the carol concert is an answer to the question “How did I help?” The answer reads, “you were by my side, which was everything,” which addresses the concert’s message of showing solidarity for those in need. Mackesy, a children’s book illustrator known for his bestselling book The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse, said: “I hope it reminds us of the beauty of being there for each other at Christmas.”

Each stage of Catherine’s return to the public eye has been widely covered in the media, with this week hosting two significant events – the emir of Qatar’s state visit and the Together at Christmas carol service. This event, more than any other this year, will place the princess at the centre stage instead of in a supporting role. This will be her big personal moment after a year of health worries described by the Prince of Wales as “brutal” for their family.

Famous performers at the carol concert include Paloma Faith, Olivia Dean, and Gregory Porter, and special guests who have worked hard to help others in their communities will also be present. The event aims to show support and empathy for those who have had a tough year, including families of those caught up in the Southport knife attacks, whom Catherine visited in October. The language in the run-up to the carol concert has been strikingly emotional, calling for greater empathy towards those facing challenges and emphasising the importance of compassion.

The tone of Catherine’s message for the carol concert is different from traditionally understated royal messages, with a greater emphasis on personal and emotional openness surrounding illness. In September, she announced she had finished her chemotherapy treatment with a message of hopeful endurance: “Out of darkness, can come light, so let that light shine bright.” This message is in line with Catherine’s call for compassion, empathy and love in the run-up to the Christmas carol service, which is being recorded for an ITV programme on 24 December
