Labour is likely to call for more investment in youth services, education and community outreach to help reduce crime in the long-term.
Climate change
This is the area in which Labour is expected to make the most eye-catching pledge.
While the government is committed to meeting its net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, Labour is expected to argue that this is not enough.
The opposition will call on the government to aim to achieve net-zero before 2050, potentially committing the UK to a stricter target more in line with the aims of some environmental groups.
The government’s own advisory body, the Climate Change Committee, has said that the UK needs to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 78% by 2035 to be on track to meet the 2050 target.
The committee has recommended that the government set legally binding targets for reducing emissions in five-yearly intervals out to 2050 and introduce a “Carbon Law” to ensure these targets are met.
Education
The government has already signalled that it wants to increase funding for education.
In September, it announced an increase in school funding that will return the budget to pre-austerity levels. It also plans to invest in more school places.
Labour is expected to call for more targeted investment to help boost schools in disadvantaged areas and reduce the attainment gap between rich and poor students.
The attainment gap widened during the pandemic, with poorer students less likely to achieve top grades.
Housing
Labour is expected to call for more investment in social housing and a reform of the private rental sector.
In its manifesto, the party pledged to build at least 100,000 council homes every year.
The government has announced measures to support home ownership, but has come under criticism from Labour for not doing enough to help those in the rental sector.
The Office for National Statistics recently estimated that 19% of households in England were in the private rented sector in 2019-20, up from 10% in 1999-2000.
