Gregg Wallace, MasterChef presenter, is facing allegations that he sexually harassed his ghostwriter for his memoir, Life On A Plate. Shannon Kyle, the ghostwriter, claimed that Wallace opened the door to her wearing only a towel, which he later dropped, made “revolting” and “sickening” sexualised suggestions to her, and touched her inappropriately. Wallace has denied the allegations. His laywers also denied that their client had engaged in any sexual misconduct with Ms Kyle.
Kyle claimed that Wallace also shared explicit details of his own sex life when working on the book between May and August 2012. The investigation comes after a BBC News investigation which received claims about inappropriate behaviour from 13 people spanning five different programs.
Wallace’s alleged behaviour has been minimised by some as “cheeky barrow-boy humour” but Kyle has described it as “revolting misogyny”. The allegations led Kyle to speak out; she described his behaviour as “predatory”, and said: “Sometimes you do have to speak up for what’s right.”
The BBC has pulled its MasterChef Christmas specials since the allegations around Wallace’s behaviour came to light. Wallace’s co-host John Torode described the recent allegations as “truly upsetting”. A BBC spokesperson thanked those who “had the courage to speak out” over allegations about Wallace. The spokesperson confirmed that Banijay UK had launched a review because they have the contractual relationship with Wallace while adding that the BBC is running its own review into workplace culture
