Alana Armstrong: Murder arrest after mum rammed off e-bike

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following a hit-and-run incident that killed a mother riding an e-bike as a passenger. Alana Armstrong, aged 25, was hit by a dark-coloured vehicle that pursued the e-bike before crashing into it on a country lane in Pleasley, Derbyshire on 26 November. The rider, a man in his 20s, was injured and required one of his legs to be amputated below the knee. Derbyshire Police arrested a 23-year-old man in early December.

Det Insp Steve Shaw praised the public response to the investigation, stating that the authorities had received a significant amount of information that has been crucial in bringing about the arrest. However, Shaw reiterated that the investigation was ongoing and called on anyone else with information that could be helpful to come forward, either by contacting the police in confidence or by submitting information anonymously to Crimestoppers.

Police discovered the Land Rover Discovery believed to have been involved over the weekend and subjected it to forensic tests. Earlier arrests of a man and woman in relation to the case have been followed by their release without charge, and a woman in her 30s remains on bail in relation to the incident.

The high-profile case has drawn renewed attention to the safety of e-bikes on British roads with calls for better provisions for their use and concerns about the risks of road accidents to riders, notably to those for whom cycling may offer a more accessible and affordable alternative to car travel
