Welsh Tories: Andrew RT Davies survives leadership vote

After a week of concerns raised by some of Andrew RT Davies’ Tory members in the Senedd, a vote of confidence was held for the Welsh Conservative leader, which he won. However, it’s understood that the Tory group was split, with nine voting in favour of Davies and seven voting against him. Davies has been the Senedd Conservative leader for most of the last 13 years, apart from a short break when Paul Davies held the role from 2018 to 2021 after Nick Bourne lost his seat in 2011.

The summer brought a controversy to Davies’ social media presence and the direction of the Conservative party. Earlier in the year, comments about halal meat had led to accusations of “race-baiting” from Muslim groups. Supporters of Davies claim that he is taking on Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, a party that poses a threat to the Conservative Party. However, opponents are concerned that the party is not trying to broaden its support.

Internal criticism from Westminster Conservatives about the direction of the Conservative Party also contributed to pressure on Davies. Prior to the next Senedd election in 2026, Former Welsh Secretary Stephen Crabb has suggested that a party refresh may be necessary. This comes after a poll revealed that the Conservatives were in fourth place in Wales, behind Plaid Cymru, Reform, and Labour.

The vote took place on Tuesday morning in a meeting room in the Senedd estate. The results of the vote mean that Davies can continue his leadership for the Welsh Conservative party, but he will need to address the issues that have been raised by his own members if he wishes to secure a victory in the next Senedd election
