Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to strengthen ties with both the US and the EU and not choose between the UK’s allies. During the Lord Mayor’s Banquet in London’s Guildhall, Sir Keir criticised the Conservatives for “turning their back on the world” and stressed the need for unity given the “dangerous times” that the world now faces. In his speech, Sir Keir said that “there is no growth without security – and no security without alliances”. The PM also reiterated his promise to renew and rebuild ties with Europe. The speech was given ahead of January’s possible US tariffs on European goods and with concerns over reduced US support for Ukraine and NATO.
Sir Keir described the current times as “dangerous times” and said that stability was essential for growth. To ensure this stability, the UK must continue to support Ukraine against Russian “erratic, increasingly desperate aggressor”. “It’s deeply in our self-interest to do so because the future of freedom in Europe is being decided today,” Sir Keir stressed. Both Clement Attlee and Winston Churchill did not choose between their allies but worked with both, and the current national interest demands that the UK follow their example, he added. The PM particularly praised US President-elect, Donald Trump, for being gracious during their meeting in September and stating that the UK “will invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with our American friends in the years to come”.
However, Conservative Party co-chair Nigel Huddlestone claimed that Labour had “set our country back” since taking power five months ago. He claimed that businesses had low confidence that working people were being punished with a jobs tax, growth projections were slashed and that Britain’s interests overseas were being surrendered
