Following their arrival in the UK on Monday, the Emir of Qatar and Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani have embarked on a state visit, with a grand welcome from the UK royalty including the King and Prince and Princess of Wales on Tuesday morning. The visit is aimed at building better diplomatic relations between the two countries, with the royals receiving a carriage procession along The Mall and attending a banquet at Buckingham Palace.

According to the UK Foreign Office, trade between the UK and Qatar is worth £6.6bn annually, with £40bn of Qatari investment in the UK economy. However, there have been calls for a peaceful protest against the visit over Qatar’s troubling human rights record, particularly its stance on LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, and the treatment of migrant workers. This has raised questions about the UK’s close relationship with the Gulf state and its willingness to overlook fundamental human rights issues.
The diplomatic visit will conclude with a grand banquet held at Buckingham Palace, where both the King and Emir will address dignitaries from both countries. The Qatari royals are expected to thoroughly enjoy their visit across the UK, especially given the substantial investment that Qatar has made in the country’s economy, and the historically warm relationship between the two nations
