Police Scotland’s Operation Silhouette has made a total of 36 arrests, seized £6m worth of cocaine and cannabis, and discovered £1.5m in cash in its fight against serious and organised crime. The operation targeted a newly identified crime group with dawn raids across 13 addresses in Greater Glasgow, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, and East Renfrewshire. In the latest phase, search warrants were granted by sheriffs, leading to over 100 officers searching for drugs and money and carrying out arrests.
The house targeted in Barrhead presented a challenge for police. The PVC front door led to officers using glass cutters to carve a hole big enough for public order officers and detectives to step through, leading to the discovery of evidence and eight arrests. Det Ch Insp Laura Sands, senior investigating officer for Operation Silhouette, explained: “Over the last 18 months we’ve become aware of this group’s presence and we’ve been working to dismantle and disrupt them. We know the misery that drugs cause in our communities and the harm they cause to vulnerable individuals.”
Police Scotland has been making significant inroads against organised crime, but despite convictions and seizures, the country’s death toll from drugs remains the worst in Europe. Between January and June 2024, there were 589 suspected drug deaths, showing little improvement on the previous year’s figure, prompting politicians and campaigners to debate whether decriminalisation for personal use would be a solution.
In the meantime, the police continue their efforts to crack down on the drugs trade, including Friday’s dawn raids, which resulted in several arrests and charges. Five men were charged with involvement in serious and organised crime, and a further two were released pending further inquiries. Det Ch Insp Sands said: “We want to send out a clear message that you are not untouchable, we will target you and bring you to justice. It’s a constant battle. We will work tirelessly and we will not stop in our fight against serious and organised crime.
