Daniel San Diego: Why would FBI fugitive hide in rural Wales?

Daniel Andreas San Diego, an American fugitive and animal rights extremist, was finally apprehended this week after spending the last 21 years on the run. San Diego had been wanted by the FBI for allegedly bombing two San Francisco office buildings in 2003. The question on everyone’s minds following his arrest is why Wales? San Diego was found in Maenan, a remote community in the Conwy valley, and while the area is undoubtedly beautiful, it hardly seems like the natural choice for a fugitive looking to evade justice.

Former undercover detective Peter Bleksley believes that the remote location had both its pros and cons for San Diego. Being so remote meant that he could live in a property where no one could see him and the inquisitive eyes of the public were far away. However, living in a terraced house in a city would have resulted in the public asking uncomfortable questions. A big city could have also been an option for anonymity, since people in cities tend not to speak to each other and you can easily blend in. However, the flip side of this is that CCTV is everywhere in major cities, which is a concern for fugitives.

San Diego had purchased a white villa with a balcony overlooking rolling hills during his time in Maenan. According to Aled Evans, who unknowingly sold his home in August 2023 to San Diego using the name Danny Webb, the location was ideal for hiding since it was so remote. Bleksley believes that it was most likely the purchase of this property that marked the start of the end of San Diego’s life on the run.

The details of how San Diego was finally captured and what led to his arrest remain a mystery. However, Peter Bleksley is eager to find out the truth. “I do hope we get to find out how it was caught, how it all unravelled because it’ll be great”, he said
