The BBC is in the spotlight again due to its handling of allegations against Gregg Wallace, a British television presenter known for hosting MasterChef. Emails have emerged showing that in 2017, broadcaster Aasmah Mir complained about inappropriate comments that Wallace allegedly made during filming of Celebrity MasterChef. While the BBC investigated Mir’s complaint, it has since been revealed that other allegations followed, including those relating to inappropriate sexual comments and behaviour. Wallace’s lawyers have denied any wrongdoing, and the BBC has urged individuals to come forward to report incidents directly to them.
Kate Phillips, a BBC executive, warned in an internal email that Wallace’s behaviour on set during Celebrity MasterChef was “unacceptable and cannot continue” following Mir’s complaint. The presenter has previously been linked to instances of inappropriate jokes centred on sex, including those made to Celebrity MasterChef contestant Kirsty Wark. Meanwhile, the Observer reports that a letter containing multiple allegations of inappropriate behaviour against Wallace was sent to the BBC in 2022, with no resulting investigation into the matter.
Following recent allegations, Wallace temporarily stepped away from presenting duties on MasterChef, with production company Banijay UK stating that the 60-year-old was committed to co-operating throughout the investigation into claims of historical misconduct. In response to the severity of claims made against Wallace, Banijay UK has appointed a London law firm, Lewis Silkin, to carry out an investigation into the allegations at hand.
Many have been surprised by the allegations surfacing against Wallace, given how highly-popular the presenter had become since his television debut in 2002. However, the serious nature of the accusations has reportedly put Wallace’s media career in doubt, with an apology unlikely to be sufficient in negating damage to his reputation in the long-term.
Given society’s ongoing efforts to stamp out sexual misconduct in the workplace, it is essential that organisations such as the BBC treat the allegations made against Wallace with the utmost seriousness. As more facts emerge, it is hoped that justice can be served for those who are found to have been harmed by Wallace’s actions
