John Tinniswood: World's oldest man dies aged 112 in Southport

The family of John Alfred Tinniswood, the world’s oldest living man, has confirmed that he has passed away at the age of 112. Mr Tinniswood died on Monday at the Southport care home where he was living. The Liverpool football fan became the world’s oldest living man in April this year. His family said his final day was “surrounded by music and love”. He was the UK’s oldest man in 2020 and was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest man in April 2024.

Born in 1912, the same year that the Titanic sank, Mr Tinniswood was the son of Ada and John Bernard Tinniswood. He was a war veteran, having served in the Royal Army Pay Corps during World War Two, where he had to locate stranded soldiers and organise food supplies. He is survived by a daughter, Susan, grandchildren Annouchka, Marisa, Toby, and Rupert, and great-grandchildren Tabitha, Callum, and Nieve.

After World War Two, Mr Tinniswood worked for Royal Mail and later as an accountant for Shell and BP. He retired in 1972. Mr Tinniswood was married to Blodwen Tinniswood. They met at a dance in Liverpool and got married in 1942. Susan was born in 1943, and they enjoyed 44 years together before Mrs Tinniswood died in 1986.

Mr Tinniswood had an “active retirement,” volunteering as a church elder at Blundellsands United Reform Church, where he also gave sermons. He moved to the Hollies Rest care home in Southport just before his 100th birthday, where his kindness and enthusiasm for life inspired the care home staff and fellow residents.

Upon turning 100 in 2012, he received an annual birthday card from the British monarch. The family has requested that donations in his memory be made to Age UK or a charity of their own choice. Jiroemon Kimura from Japan holds the record for the oldest living person, living up to 116 years and 54 days. He died in 2013. The oldest living woman today is Tomiko Itooka, also from Japan, currently aged 116
