'Tripadvisor for smugglers' Welsh car wash owners plead guilty


Two people have pleaded guilty to people smuggling halfway through their trial. Dilshad Shamo, 41, and Ali Khdir, 40, were convicted for their parts in a human trafficking operation that ran through Europe, which was hailed as the “Tripadvisor for people smugglers”. Over the course of two years, the pair brought around 100 migrants illegally to Europe each week. The two men, based in a car wash in Caerphilly, Wales, offered the migrants packages ranging from bronze to platinum depending on the level of risk. Migrants rated their journeys in videos filmed inside lorries, boats and planes.

According to the National Crime Agency (NCA), most of those using their service were from Iran, Iraq and Syria, and were searching for a better life in western Europe. Many are believed to have come to the UK. A platinum package could get passengers a flight, whereas silver might land them a “comfortable ride” in the back of a lorry. Platinum customers received a fake passport and air travel, costing between £10,000 and £25,000. The gold tier would be by vessel, costing about £8,000-£10,000, while the most risky service, bronze, would involve travel in a heavy goods vehicle and cost between £3,000 and £5,000.

Derek Evans from NCA stated that the two men operated as though they were a travel agency and that it was like a ratings site. The platinum package would get clients that were fleeing their home countries a fake passport and air travel, with the cost ranging anywhere from £10,000 to £25,000. This came as extensive amounts of video recommendations were found on the smugglers’ phones.
