Gatwick Airport South Terminal evacuated over suspect luggage


Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal has been evacuated following the discovery of a suspected prohibited item in a piece of luggage. Passengers have been unable to enter the terminal since 10:55 GMT. Sussex Police confirmed that an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team had been deployed to the site. A security cordon has been put in place while the situation is dealt with. Police have warned of significant disruption to travel in the area.
 
The incident is causing delays of up to 90 minutes for some passengers, with Laurence Kemball-Cook, who was due to fly to Portugal, describing the situation as “waiting with no guarantees“. The National Rail Enquiries website confirmed that services were not stopping at Gatwick Airport station, affecting Thameslink, Southern, and Gatwick Express services. The public have been advised to avoid the area where possible.
 
Approximately 100,000 passengers were due to fly in and out of Gatwick yesterday, while half of those passengers were using the South Terminal. There was no timeline provided regarding when normal service will resume. The incident led to road closures in the area and caused significant delays to bus services. The evacuation of the South Terminal is ongoing, while the authorities continue their investigation.
