BBC Radio 1 has unveiled the candidates for the Sound of 2025, which includes breakout artists Chappell Roan and Barry Can’t Swim, as well as newcomers Myles Smith and Good Neighbours. The award is bestowed to budding musicians who boast “the best chance of mainstream success” in the forthcoming year. In the past, winners of the award have included major names such as Adele, Sam Smith, Michael Kiwanuka, PinkPantheress, and Haim. The ultimate victor will be announced live by BBC Radio 1 and BBC News next month.
Various industry professionals made up of over 180 music experts and artists, Musicians including Sir Elton John, Jorja Smith, Dua Lipa, and Sam Smith, as well as esteemed representatives from Spotify, the Glastonbury Festival, and the BBC, selected the nominees. The longlist also includes Northern Irish rap act Kneecap and indie band English Teacher.
US pop star Chappell Roan appears to be the top nominee, after a triumphant year where she went from backing vocalist for the likes of Olivia Rodrigo to becoming a breakout pop sensation. Her songs are known for being cheerful and catchy, highlighting her sexual awakening and coming-of-age. Roan was even nominated for six Grammys, with her debut project, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, receiving nods for Album of the Year and Best New Artist. Also tipped to do well are London jazz group Ezra Collective, whose previous album, Where I’m Meant to Be, won the Mercury Prize in 2023, and rapper Doecheii, who was recognised for her album Alligator Bites Don’t Heal at the Grammys and in a Rolling Stone review.
The list includes an untypical balance of solo artists and bands, with five of the eleven spots being occupied by groups. This year’s applicants highlight a contemporary artistic freedom, which may mirror an evolving musical landscape
