Police have closed down Glasgow’s Buchanan Bus Station after a suspicious package was discovered. Three men have been arrested in connection with the incident, which was believed to involve the recovery of “offensive weapons”. Passengers were urged to avoid the area, which was cordoned off and evacuated. Also evacuated were the Glasgow Caledonian University campus and the Royal Concert Hall. The station was closed and surrounding roads were shut to traffic, while diversions were put in place.
The bomb squad was called out following reports of a suspicious package at Scotland’s busiest bus station at around 13:10. Glasgow Caledonian University campus, situated across the road from the bus station, was also evacuated. The Royal Concert Hall, on Killermont Street, said performances were cancelled due to “circumstances beyond our control”. In response, station operator Strathclyde Partnership for Transport apologised for the disruption and said passengers would be updated when it reopened. Stagecoach, First Bus, McGills and other bus firms use the station.
In response, commuters were advised to check with operators on how their services were affected. Diversion information could be found on operator’s websites, with some services collecting passengers at nearby bus stops as alternatives. Police Scotland have made three arrests in connection with the incident, but investigations are ongoing. In the meantime, Buchanan Bus Station remains closed, with no announcements as yet relating to its reopening
