Leah Senior, 27, took her own life in van fall – inquest

Leah Senior, a 27-year-old woman from Huddersfield, intentionally leapt from a moving van, an inquest has heard. Miss Senior was travelling in a Ford Transit driven by her boyfriend on Denby Dale Road on January 17 when she fell from the vehicle. Her boyfriend was detained briefly after the incident but was not charged with any wrongdoing.

At the inquest held at Wakefield Coroner’s Court, it was concluded that her death was by suicide and, importantly, there was no hint that her partner was in any way involved. Det Sgt Andrew Queen of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Inquiry Team described how the case had initially been treated as a potential murder inquiry, but “those suspicions were completely allayed by the investigation.”

Leah Senior’s mother, Hayley, had given evidence at the inquest that her daughter had grown up as “a happy, sassy and really jolly girl.” However, losing her grandmother when she was 13 had a severe impact on her mental health, and she further developed problems with alcohol during the Covid lockdown in 2020. Although she saw healthcare professionals about both her drinking and her mental health, Leah felt that she wasn’t going to get any help.

Coroner Oliver Longstaff said that it was evident that Leah had “undertaken some research on how to end one’s life” and had attempted to take her own life on two previous occasions. He added that her death was from “injuries sustained when she deliberately jumped” from the van and reiterated that the evidence gave “no suggestion” that her partner was involved in any way. Leah’s mother described how shocked she and the family were at the loss of someone who had been such a happy person and was so close to her family.
