Sam Fender tackles grief in new single People Watching

North Shields singer Sam Fender has shared how the loss of his “very close” friend and mentor, Annie Orwin, inspired his latest single “People Watching”. Annie was a “surrogate mother” to Sam, and the song recounts Sam’s experience of visiting her in the care home where she eventually passed away. The song expresses Sam’s love for Annie and recounts his promise to help her out of the understaffed care home. The upbeat track is part of Sam’s upcoming third album, which will be released in February 2025.

Sam’s two previous albums, Hypersonic Missiles and Seventeen Going Under, both reached the top of the UK charts, with the latter shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Sam admits that Annie was the person who initially gave him the confidence to perform and was always keen for him to acknowledge her in his work, complaining about not ever being mentioned in his acceptance speeches.

He says that People Watching was the last song he wrote for the album. The writing process for People Watching was an emotional one for Sam, who in the wake of Annie’s death, found himself penning a series of new songs pertaining to his grief. The upcoming album is inspired by the people and places he knows and is described as “more outward-pointing than Seventeen Going Under,” a “collection of stories.”

Despite struggling with grief, Sam says the writing process was cathartic and helped him pay homage to Annie, who was larger than life. He said “It’s just a song about how much I love her really, and how much I respected her. She was larger than life, so I felt like she needed something that was soaring.” It has received critical acclaim since it was released earlier this week
