Man pleads guilty following fatal Sunderland XL bully attack

Christopher Bell, a 45-year-old man who was formerly of Maple Terrace, Shiney Row, has pleaded guilty to being the owner of a dog that caused injury leading to death while dangerously out of control in a public place. The attack happened on 3 October last year when Ian Langley, 54, was walking his Patterdale puppy in Shiney Row, near Sunderland. Bell, who now lives in Hull, was granted bail and is set to be sentenced on 27 January at Newcastle Crown Court.

According to Northumbria Police, Bell’s dog, an American bully XL named Titan, attacked Langley, leading to fatal injuries to his neck. The officers who arrived at the scene shot the animal to protect the public. Langley, originally from Liverpool, died in hospital from his injuries.

In the UK, a law introduced in February 2021 banned individuals from owning XL bully breeds without an exemption certificate. The Crown Prosecution Service is said to have called for an assessment from a veterinary expert to determine the likelihood of such an attack happening again in the future.

Langley’s family described him as a “kind-hearted family man,” adding that they are devastated by his death. “He was a man who had a lot of love for animals and everyone who knew him knew that,” they said.
