Davina McCall, the British television presenter, has left intensive care after undergoing surgery to remove a rare brain tumour. Michael Douglas, McCall’s partner, revealed on her Instagram account that she had made “an enormous leap forward”. In a video posted Friday, McCall had announced that she had been diagnosed with a colloid cyst, a type of benign tumour. Colloid cysts, which are fluid-filled and located in the brain, form in only 2% of all primary brain tumours.
After her diagnosis, McCall’s neurosurgeon performed a craniotomy to remove the tumour from her skull. Douglas confirmed that the procedure had been “textbook”. McCall’s contributions to the TV industry led to a special recognition award at the National TV Awards earlier this year.
McCall, who hosts popular shows such as Big Brother and Long Lost Family, also campaigns for menopause awareness, after being inspired by her own experiences with changing hormones. Last year, she co-wrote Menopausing with Dr Naomi Potter, winning the top prize in the British Book Awards. McCall’s Channel 4 documentary, Sex, Myths and Menopause, in 2021, led to a surge in demand for hormone replacement therapy (HRT), dubbed the “Davina effect”.
Brainstrust, a charity that focuses on brain tumours, explains that colloid cysts are filled with fluid and not cancerous but they can grow slowly. Rates of growth and symptoms may vary from person to person. Douglas thanked McCall’s followers for their support amidst her health scare
