How Butlin's hopefuls audition to become a Redcoat

Hopeful performers gathered at auditions across the UK to take their first step into the entertainment business and try to become a Butlin’s Redcoat. Redcoats have been entertaining guests at Butlin’s resorts since 1936, with famous people like Sir Cliff Richard and Stephen Mulhern among them who have donned the famous blazer. Billy Butlin, who founded the company, created the Redcoat role after seeing holidaymakers sitting and not engaging in activities he had planned.

The rigorous process consisted of first interviews and then group activities, where people who were auditioning were expected to get involved in games with icebreakers and jokes which transformed the atmosphere at Butlin’s resorts. This followed by a 60-second showcase, where candidates expected to impress the judges. There was a cacophony of nervous laughter and chatting as candidates talked about their 60-second chance to impress the judges, while some chatted excitedly and others scratched their arms nervously.

Dozens of people attended auditions across the UK. One of them was 19-year-old Katie Jickells who travelled over 160 miles from Huddersfield to take part in the auditions, which made her nervous. She said that it had always been her dream to become a Redcoat. “I’ve been coming to Butlin’s since I was a baby, so it’s just a dream really,” she said. Darren Hall, 43, who brought his acoustic guitar with him, said that he was quite nervous about the audition but would be himself, sing, and play in the hope of impressing the judges.

Not everyone was fortunate enough to be selected. Only about a third of those attending auditions were selected for the next phase of the process. The process involved rigorous interviews, group activities, and a 60-second showcase, as the managers looked for the right person to wear the Redcoat jacket. Candidates like Stephen Gamage and Joe Jenney, who were friends, showed their abilities, talent, and passion during their auditions. Katie Jickells, who was the first to audition edged through to the last phase of the process after flipping and body-popping in a street dance routine. The candidates were now awaiting the judges’ final decision
