Four arrests after M62 crash during police pursuit

A high-speed police chase ended in a collision on the M62 near Huddersfield, leaving one man critically injured in hospital. The crash occurred around 3 pm on Saturday when a white Toyota Corolla that was being pursued by police crashed into a Peugeot 306 just before Junction 24 of the motorway. The Peugeot driver was rushed to the hospital, while four women traveling in the Toyota were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

According to West Yorkshire Police, the police pursuit started at about 2:55 pm when the Toyota failed to stop for officers on the M621 as it was moving towards the M62 at Birstall. The police authorized the pursuit, but the Toyota drove at high-speed towards Manchester on the M62. The Peugeot driver sustained severe injuries as a result of the crash and is currently in a critical but stable condition.

After the incident, the M62 was shut down in both directions for over five hours, leading to traffic snarls and one-hour delays. While the eastbound carriageway of the motorway was reopened at 8:20 pm, the westbound carriageway remained closed early Sunday morning to allow for an investigation. The Independent Office for Police Conduct was notified as standard procedure for an incident of this nature.

The incident highlights the danger high-speed police chases can pose to other motorists and pedestrians. The authorities have to balance the need to apprehend suspected criminals with the risk of collateral damage and potential injury to innocent bystanders. This accident reinforces the importance of effective policies and operating procedures to ensure public safety during high-speed police pursuits
