The United Kingdom is set to experience a bout of wintery weather as we head into the coming week, driven by a flow of cold Arctic air. The national weather service, the Met Office, has issued snow and ice warnings for later today through to Tuesday, with Scotland and higher ground areas of the country being the most exposed to disruptive snowfall. Temperatures across the nation are expected to be below average for this time of the year from Sunday, with frosts predicted throughout the week.
Scotland and its northern regions will be the first areas to experience the predicted wintery showers, with snowfall already expected on Sunday afternoon. The Met Office has warned that between 5-10 centimetres of snow may settle on parts of northern Scotland, with 1-3 centimetres possible elsewhere at lower altitudes. There is also an elevated risk of localised ice, so it’s advised drivers and pedestrians take extra care on roads and pavements.
As the Meteorologists have warned that the cold fitness could bring about some snow and ice, many people may be hoping to catch a glimpse of the skies without clouds. The bright skies, being driven by the Arctic air, may clear to reveal “The Leonid meteor shower” according to Alex Deakin, BBC Meteorologist. The best chance to see this stunning cosmic show is expected to be on a clear Sunday night.
The weather system will move its way from the Atlantic on Monday and, with the current uncertainty in the forecast, there could be some deviation from the prediction. While most parts of England and Scotland are expected to be wet with rain, the North of the country and Southern regions of Scotland have an increased risk of snow. The areas where high ground and land elevation is greatest will be most prone to the precipitation. The Met Office has issued yellow alerts for Scotland and Northern England for Monday and Tuesday, with the Pennines expecting 15-20 centimetres of snowfall and possibly causing some disruption.
The cold spell isn’t expected to combat anytime soon, so residents of the United Kingdom should brace themselves with these winter conditions for at least another week. Furthermore, there may also be brighter skies with sunny conditions with some morning frosts while continuing to watch out for wintery showers. Scotland and the North of England remain most exposed to disruptive snowfall
