Over 100 individuals are seeking compensation after falling ill on a P&O cruise ship. Passengers travelling on the Ventura, a P&O owned ship, have claimed that the ship suffered “repeated outbreaks” of illness between April and June. In May, over 500 holidaymakers were diagnosed with symptoms of norovirus after departing from Southampton on a two-week cruise around the Canary Islands.
Hudgell Solicitors is working on behalf of 115 holidaymakers who are looking for compensation for “illness, loss of enjoyment and losses”. The firm has claimed that it is “undeniable” that the ship suffered from a prolific bout of illness, which has resulted in hundreds of individuals’ holidays being ruined. A P&O spokesperson apologised for any guests who were affected and claimed that they would be responding to the letter of claim in due course.
The parent company, Carnival, has six weeks to acknowledge these claims, and a further six months to investigate and respond. Passengers who were affected on the ship said that there were problems with norovirus for weeks leading up to the largest outbreak, with 92 people taken ill during a Ventura cruise around Spain and Portugal.
Howard and Hazel Lunn from Devon are part of the group asking for compensation after falling ill just days into their £5,000 cruise. The couple set sail for the Canary Islands on 11 May and were soon asked to isolate themselves in their cabin when they contracted norovirus. Mr Lunn alleged that P&O attempted to “hide the figures” regarding how many of those on board were ill. Passengers claimed that P&O’s response downplayed the number of people taken ill by the virus.
Although, P&O put in place a “wide range of approved protocols,” including asking unwell passengers to isolate themselves in their rooms and closing onboard launderettes and preventing passengers from serving themselves at the buffet, illness continued to spread. Some parts of the ship were also fogged – a process that involves spraying special disinfectant into a sealed room as part of the deep-cleaning efforts
