Preparations for Kettering Town’s second televised FA Cup appearance are well underway as lifelong fans of the club volunteer to get their 3,000-capacity ground ready. The Poppies beat local rivals Northampton Town in the first round, 2-1 at Sixfields, and are set to play League Two’s Doncaster Rovers next month. Excitement is mounting and, as a result, there has been an increase in attendance at the club’s matches.
Volunteers have been hard at work for weeks, painting fences, repairing faulty taps and bushes, cutting back trees and hedges as well as improving the grounds in general. Roger Rose, from Burton Latimer, says fans notice the little things that need to be done to improve their “beloved club” and that there is a lot of expertise in the community that the club utilises. Rose, a former technician in the NHS, enjoys the camaraderie of the volunteers, explaining: “We all have a laugh and a joke, often at each other’s expense, but it’s a really good atmosphere.”
Mike Thurland, another devoted fan, adds that being a part of the group has been a good place to be, especially for someone who, along with his wife, has been following the Poppies for “probably 60 years now.” Painting the club shop, which is a 12-meter container situated in the club’s car park, twice was one of his more recent tasks, but he says everyone is willing to lend a helping hand where necessary, and new faces are always welcome.
Club secretary and groundsman Ian Hopewell has praised the volunteers’ work, saying that they have done a remarkable job.
