Prince Harry and Labour’s former deputy leader Tom Watson are continuing legal claims against News Group Newspapers (NGN) over alleged unlawful information gathering by journalists and private investigators. The two are among 39 claimants and cases settled since the last hearing in July. The 40-year-old prince alleges that NGN, which also published the now-defunct News of the World, targeted him. Both cases are expected to go to trial in January 2025. NGN has previously denied unlawful activity occurred at The Sun.
During a return to court for preliminary issues to be ruled on prior to the trial, Prince Harry’s barrister, David Sherborne, asked if the prince could access “relevant emails sent between five email accounts of NGN employees and five employees of the Royal household” between January 2013 and September 2019. Sherborne said the emails would be “highly relevant in terms of providing the full picture not only as to the actual knowledge of the claimant but also as to the position in relation to constructive knowledge, based on what the Palace was being told by NGN.” NGN’s lawyer, Anthony Hudson, however, opposed the bid as irrelevant.
In a ruling, judge Mr Justice Fancourt said a limited number of emails should be provided. The judge also called on “further work to be done on both sides,” stressing that “so little progress had been made”. The trial is scheduled to last between six and eight weeks, with another hearing due in December.
Hugh Grant, Sienna Miller, and ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne are among other claimants who have previously settled claims against NGN involving privacy intrusions. NGN has said it apologised in 2011 to “victims of voicemail interception by the News of the World,” adding the company had “publicly committed to paying financial compensation” and had since “paid settlements to those with proper claims” as part of efforts to resolve claims out of court
