Swanage care home deaths: Woman released without charge

Three residents at Gainsborough Care Home in Swanage were found dead on 23 October. Authorities have claimed that they died due to possible carbon monoxide poisoning. Detectives has found this to be unexplained and the woman who was taken into custody on the suspicion of manslaughter has since been released without bearing any charges. Two of the three victims were men, aged 74 and 91, the other being an 86-year-old woman.

Det Ch Insp Neil Third mentioned the extensive investigations undergone by HM Coroner to find the cause of death. The purpose of the arrest was to recover evidence and provide legal protection to the suspect, while figuring out if they had any negligent actions or omissions. While the residents waited for the results, they were moved to temporary accommodations in Hampshire, West Sussex and Dorset. The home has remained unoccupied, while over 40 of its residents wait for progress and updates.

The spokesperson of Gainsborough Care Home confirmed that they are deeply saddened by the loss of the residence and are cooperating fully with lead agencies. The evidence from the investigation is being carefully examined and it could become a few months to conclude any findings.

This investigation would help the authorities identify if the death occurred due to systemic toxic exposure or if carbon monoxide was the cause, as authorities had initially believed. The investigation may shed light on other undiscovered issues that may affect care homes throughout the UK. Until the conclusion of the investigation, it is hard to discern what other factors may have contributed to the deaths
