Six children rescued after bus crashes into ditch in Wisbech

Emergency services were called to the scene of a bus crash in Cambridgeshire, where six school children were rescued from a water-filled ditch. According to police reports, the children were evacuated from the bus and none of them appeared to be injured. The driver of the bus was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. The accident happened near Wisbech St Mary and, as a result of the incident, surrounding roads were closed throughout the evening.

An eyewitness stated that he heard the children screaming and went to their aid. Laurence Manning helped the children, who were then escorted to safety. “We pulled each school kid out one by one and then we tended to the driver who was still in the cab,” he said. “The roof was caved in. As we’re in the bus we could hear creaks and cracks because it was sinking even more.” Mr Manning went on to explain that he had to check the bus several times after the accident, but luckily, nobody was seriously injured.

A neighbour of the children who had been rescued, Katie-Leigh Julian, shared her thoughts on the incident. “The experience was not nice at all when it comes down to anyone, but when it’s children around and there’s no parents around it is heart-breaking,” she said. Cambridgeshire Police stated that emergency crews would remain at the scene for the duration of the evening to investigate the accident and recover the vehicle.

The fire department also responded to the accident, assisting the driver out of the bus. CCTV footage captured the moment the bus collided with the ditch, sinking and causing the roof to cave in. It was stressed that all children are accounted for and are safe
