Laura Hudson, from Astley near Wigan, found out she had an aggressive form of breast cancer at 36 weeks pregnant with her first child. Not only was she preparing for a Caesarean section to deliver her baby, but she was also preparing to undergo chemotherapy and have a mastectomy. Laura and her husband Sam were shocked by the news and thought of their baby girl first. They were relieved when Laura was declared cancer-free. Now the family is celebrating Aurora’s first birthday together.
Laura first realised something was wrong when she felt a lump in her right breast but wasn’t too concerned at first. She visited her GP, who thought it was “most likely to do with pregnancy” and asked her to return in two weeks. During her second appointment, Laura realised the lump got bigger and the doctor sent a request for further checks. Specialists quickly realised she had cancer.
Aurora was safely delivered at 37 weeks. Although the family was together for a few days, Laura quickly needed to start chemotherapy before her mastectomy and breast reconstruction. The treatment at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan has been successful, meaning Laura and Sam can focus all of their energies on taking care of their baby.
Laura’s consultant at The Christie, Claire Kelly, described Laura as an “inspirational woman” who, by sharing her story, had also raised awareness of the disease. “A lump is not the only symptom of breast cancer, so it’s important that people check themselves regularly and know what’s normal for them,” added Dr Kelly. Breast cancer symptoms are listed on the NHS website. Laura said her life with Aurora has been “amazing” and “she’s made the last year worth going through”. Laura stresses that “she’s my aurora in the truest sense of the word, a beautiful light in the dark.
