Doctors, the medical TV drama, concludes with its final episode today. Despite a 9,000-signature petition to save the soap, it was cancelled after 24 years. The show followed the daily lives of staff and patients of a Midlands GP practice and aired over 4,500 episodes. Although the announcement was met with disappointment from viewers, the cancellation was due to the rising cost of production.
The decision to cancel the programme galvanised superfan Carys Ashby to take action and start the petition. She expressed her concern for older viewers who often based their day around watching the show and its beloved characters. However, she has now accepted the decision and sadly acknowledged that their final bow represents the “end of an era”.
The cancellation of the show comes as a blow to many who worked on it. Writer and director Joy Wilkinson had considered working on other TV dramas, however, expressed that she would have left the profession if it hadn’t been for the creative and supportive environment that came with working on Doctors.
The show has been a springboard for many actors, household names such as Eddie Redmayne and Sheridan Smith have appeared on the soap and it has been the recipient of numerous Bafta awards. While Doctors comes to an end, the BBC remains wholeheartedly committed to West Midlands television production.
