Gary Lineker: Presenter to stop hosting Match of the Day, BBC confirms

BBC Sport’s flagship football show, Match of the Day, will be losing host Gary Lineker at the end of this season. However, the BBC has confirmed that Lineker will be hosting the network’s coverage of the 2026 World Cup in addition to the FA Cup in 2025/2026. The presenter, who has been with Match of the Day since 1999, will front the MOTD Top Ten and The Rest is Football podcasts. BBC Sport’s Director, Alex Kay-Jelski, described Lineker as a “world-class presenter”. The network and Lineker have agreed in principle to extend his contract through to the 2026 World Cup.

According to BBC News, the presenter was amenable to staying on at Match of the Day, but the network did not offer him a contract for the show. The announcement of future plans for the show will be made at a later time. Future plans for the MOTD will take into account changing viewing habits and provide unprecedented analysis and commentary across all platforms.

Match of the Day is an iconic show with 33 million viewers last season across the Premier League and FA Cup. It remains a staple of football fans who eagerly anticipate the iconic theme tune on Saturday nights. Lineker is one of BBC Sports’ best-known presenters and the corporation’s highest-paid star. In addition to hosting live coverage of World Cup and European Championships, he also co-founded production company Goalhanger, which creates the popular podcasts The Rest is History, The Rest is Politics, and The Rest is Entertainment.

Replacing a star presenter on a high-profile show is always a risk, but it is projected that Lineker will leave the network with a bang at the biggest tournament in world football. He will have held the post for 26 years when he leaves at the end of the Premier League season in May 2025
