Walworth: Man charged with murder after stabbings at market

A man in his 60s has been charged with murder after a stabbing attack at a market in South London which left one man dead and two others injured. The incident occurred at around 10:40 GMT on Sunday, when Metropolitan Police were called to reports of multiple stabbings in East Street in Walworth. Upon arrival, officers found three people with serious injuries, and Hilkiah McLeggan, 77, from Southwark, died at the scene. Two other men were taken to hospital, with one in critical condition.

The suspect, Ali Musse, 66, of no fixed address, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, in addition to murder. He will appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. Mr McLeggan’s family have been informed of his death and are being supported by specialist officers.

Ch Supt Seb Adjei-Addoh, who leads the Met’s policing in Southwark, has described the incident as “horrific,” and thanked members of the public who assisted officers at the scene. He added that there would be an increased police presence in the Walworth area to provide reassurance to locals and small businesses operating in East Street.

Police are also urging the public not to speculate that the incident was terror-related after posts began circulating on social media. They are asking anyone with information on the events to contact 101 or CrimeStoppers anonymously
