A UK nurse has been struck off the nursing register for drinking while on duty and offering alcoholic drinks to colleagues. Jenny Steer, who was clinical lead at Country View Nursing Home in Kettering, Northamptonshire, had already been suspended for a year by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) last year. According to the NMC, Steer drank alcohol in the presence of colleagues and while on shift between December 2019 and July 2020.
In its report, the NMC panel said that Steer’s “misconduct in ‘normalising’ the drinking of alcohol on duty was a serious breach of professional standards.” Steer did not attend the hearing but apologised in a written submission to a previous hearing, acknowledging that she had made a mistake by drinking alcohol on shift and offering alcoholic drinks to colleagues. She expressed remorse for her actions, the panel said.
A review of the suspension order carried out by the NMC on 4 November found that Steer had stopped practising as a nurse in 2020. The panel concluded that she would be likely to repeat the same behaviour if she returned to nursing and issued a striking-off order effective 20 December, the date on which the original suspension was to end.
This case highlights the importance of professional conduct in healthcare and the need for nurses to adhere to strict standards of behaviour. Drinking and offering alcohol to colleagues while on duty undermines trust in the nursing profession and can have serious consequences for patient safety and wellbeing. The NMC’s decision to strike off Steer from the nursing register sends a clear message that such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated
