Newspaper headlines: 'Reeves is driving up prices' and William's 'hardest year'


The Bank of England has warned that the UK is set to encounter a fresh increase in inflation due to Chancellor Rachel Reeves’s “tax-and-spend Budget”. According to the Daily Telegraph, banks have begun raising mortgage costs despite the Bank’s interest rate cut to 4.75%. Further, Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, has indicated that the interest rates are expected to “continue to fall gradually” but with caution, as there are a number of risks both domestically and on a global level. The Financial Times argues that the Bank’s decision to cut interest rates is testament to the Bank’s prudence as the new government’s first budget “fuels inflation fears”.

The outgoing US President, Donald Trump, called on Americans to “bring down the temperature” as his own party “turned its ire” on him over the defeat of Vice-President Kamala Harris. Joe Biden appealed to Americans for national unity after his victory in the US presidential election. The Guardian newspaper also reported a call by campaigners for a tax on unhealthy food to tackle obesity.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has admitted to failing to pass on concerns relating to abuse allegations against John Smyth QC, who is believed to have been the most prolific serial abuser associated with the Church of England. An independent review has alleged that the abuse of over 100 children and young men by the British barrister was covered up within the Church for decades. The Daily Mail features journalist and author Bryony Gordon, who has spoken about ‘creepy things’ she says Russell Brand did on their dates. Detectives investigating Mr Brand over allegations of historical sex offences recently sent prosecutors a file of evidence so they could consider bringing charges.

The Sun reported an angered Jeremy Clarkson after a planned farmers’ protest in Westminster was cancelled “for legal reasons”. Meanwhile, the Daily Star features cartoon Trump in a flying saucer, urging disclosure of “secret US info on existence of aliens”.
