William: Prince of Wales says its been hardest year of his life

During his visit to South Africa, Prince William spoke about the challenging year that he and his family have faced. The King was diagnosed with cancer in February, and the Princess of Wales was diagnosed just six weeks later. “It’s been dreadful. It’s probably been the hardest year in my life. So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult,” he said.

However, the Prince expressed his pride in his wife and father for the way they have handled their diagnoses. “But from a personal family point of view, it’s been brutal,” he added. The King has since returned to public duties, and the Princess has now finished her chemotherapy treatment.

During his time in South Africa, the Prince of Wales accompanied the Earthshot prize awards ceremony. Five different projects were awarded £1m each for their environmental innovations. In response to being asked if he liked the freedom and responsibility that came with his role as Prince of Wales, he said, “It’s a tricky one. Do I like more responsibility? The Prince also commented on the importance of using his role and platform to do good and help people’s lives in a genuinely meaningful way. He has been sporting a beard since the summer, which even his daughter, Princess Charlotte, has commented on. “Well Charlotte didn’t like it the first time. I got floods of tears, so I had to shave it off. And then I grew it back. I thought, hang on a second, and I convinced her it was going to be okay.”

Finally, on his last day in Cape Town, the Prince learned more about the work of Abalobi, a program that aims to protect small-scale fishing communities and was a 2023 Earthshot prize finalist. However, some protests occurred when a small group of protesters held up placards or shouted about various issues, including Israel’s conflict, indigenous rights, the culling of baboons, and lack of representation for local fishermen
