Ian Paterson: Jailed surgeon removed breast tissue, inquest told

Ian Paterson, who is currently serving a prison sentence for wounding related to operations, has testified in an inquest into the death of Christine Baker, one of his former breast cancer patients. Baker died in 2015, aged 59, after her cancer returned following surgery. The inquiry has already considered details of so-called “cleavage-sparing” mastectomies. The extent to which any remaining breast tissue might have caused a cancer’s return has been the focus of such proceedings. Baker’s is the third of 62 premature patient deaths that will be examined by a coroner.

Paterson has admitted to the inquest that all the breast tissue of Baker was removed during her mastectomy process. Baker, a school teacher, who resided in Solihull, had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy in 2005. However, the disease returned in 2007, where Baker had another mastectomy. Birmingham’s Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust had employed Paterson, who also worked in the independent sector at Spire Little Aston and Spire Parkway.

Paterson has been questioned about whether all the breast tissue had been removed during the second mastectomy. He said all the tissue had been removed, describing the idea that anyone undertaking reconstruction would require additional materials as “nonsense”. Paterson has also said that he disagrees with a multi-disciplinary team’s claims that excessive tissue had been left. He adds that “there is a lot of evidence that completely disproves it.”

During the inquest, Paterson was shown a pathology report that suggested that the tumour had touched its excision margin. Paterson was asked if this report indicated that the tumour may have not been removed completely, to which he replied: “No.” Two separate experts have confirmed that Baker’s death was not related to the recurrence of her 2005 cancer. Nonetheless, proceedings continue while the inquest considers her case. Earlier examinations have also taken place into the deaths of Elaine Turbill and Chloe Nikitas.

This latest development comes shortly after it was announced that Paterson will face further charges at Nottingham Crown Court next month. The charges relate to eight women and one man who were treated at the NHS-run hospitals. The charges relate to harm caused to the patients through breast surgery by the surgeon between 1997 and 2011, for which he was convicted in 2017. The new case will concern the latter years of this period
