Edinburgh police have identified the man who died after being hit by a bus as Michael Leneghan, aged 74. The incident occurred last Saturday in the Cowgate area of the city, which was busy with people visiting bars and nightclubs. The police have asked the public not to distribute images or videos of the aftermath of the crash, to respect Mr. Leneghan’s family. His relatives have expressed their thanks to the emergency services and requested privacy.
Mr. Leneghan was a pedestrian at the time of the collision. The police erected a cordon covering a wide area of the street. In addition, they protected the view from the South Bridge with screens. The road was closed for hours while police gathered information about the incident. The police are continuing to investigate and are analyzing both public and private CCTV footage.
Sgt Paul Ewing, who is leading the investigation, said, “Our thoughts remain with Michael’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by this tragic incident.” It is understood that several people saw the incident and that some hotels, bars, and clubs closed early as part of the investigation. Police Scotland made an appeal for information to help their inquiry.
