CPS to consider bringing charges against Tim Westwood

Prosecutors have been handed a file containing evidence for consideration of charges against former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood, detectives have revealed. The investigation comes after allegations of non-recent sexual abuse were made by women accusing Westwood of predatory and unwanted sexual behaviour spanning the period from 1992 to 2017 when he was at the height of his career. The former DJ also stands accused of abusing his position of influence within the music industry. In response to the allegations in April, Westwood strenuously denied the claims.

The investigation is being led by Det Supt Andy Furphy, who announced that investigations were ongoing and that specialist support was being given to those involved. Furphy revealed that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) had been sent a file of evidence and that officers “will thoroughly and properly investigate sexual offences as part of our commitment to making London safer”. The CPS is tasked with deciding which cases should be prosecuted from those investigated by the police.

The Metropolitan police have said that a man in his 60s has been interviewed on four separate occasions. The offences are alleged to have taken place in London between 1982 and 2016 and the incident is not being assisted by the Hydrant Programme at this stage of the ongoing investigation. In addition, the police statement emphasised that the investigation was both complex and sensitive, with an absolute priority to maintain the integrity of the investigation and support potential victims without risking jigsaw identification.

The investigation has been reported on previously by BBC News and The Guardian, and some believe that the news outlets’ investigation led to the current laws being enforced. A review into Westwood’s employment by the BBC between 1982 and 2002 was initially instigated by the corporation in August 2022. Conducted by Gemma White KC, the review assessed the historic workplace of the former Radio 1 DJ, following revelations of six complaints of bullying or sexual misconduct against him.

The investigation is ongoing and a report from the review is yet to be published. However, the Metropolitan police have warned the BBC that the release of certain parts of the review may impact the ongoing investigation
