51 migrants were rescued after their boat encountered trouble trying to cross the English Channel, according to the French coastguard. The small vessel’s engine failed off the coast of Audresselles in northern France on Tuesday. A rescue boat took the 51 individuals to Boulogne-sur-Mer, where they received emergency services.
The same week, two bodies were found in the English Channel on the French side, and three others were found off the coast of Calais; it is unknown whether any of these individuals were migrants. One of the bodies was discovered on a beach in Calais, while two were found adrift off the coast of the city. A search was initiated after a ferry notified officials of a body drifting off the coast of Calais, and two bodies were subsequently found by a French patrol boat.
Police are investigating the three deaths. Meanwhile, Kent Police confirmed that a third body was found in the Channel near Dover on Tuesday. Authorities are investigating the identity of the man and whether he was attempting to cross the Channel.
Home Office figures indicate that 263 individuals crossed the Channel in four boats on Wednesday alone. So far, this year’s provisional total is 31,535, which is 18% higher than last year. However, it is 21% lower than the same point in 2022, which holds the record for the highest number of Channel crossings.
