Suzy Lamplugh murder suspect John Cannan dies in prison

John Cannan, who was convicted of killing newlywed Shirley Banks in 1989 and was a suspect in the disappearance of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh, has died in prison at the age of 70. Other searches were conducted in Worcestershire and Somerset.

The Prison Service confirmed the death and said that the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman would investigate: “As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.” Cannan was incarcerated in Full Sutton.

Cannan was convicted of the abduction and murder of Shirley Banks, the Clifton factory manager. He was given a life sentence and a further two for rape. Cannan was arrested in Birmingham 11 days after the murder with some of Mrs Banks’ possessions.
