With Black Friday looming, consumers looking for luxury advent calendars have been warned to beware of online scams. Beyond the traditional chocolate-filled offerings, advent calendars available on the market now range from premium beauty and grooming products to luxury foods and alcoholic drinks, with a few even offering bespoke pieces of jewellery. However, it has emerged that scammers are taking advantage of this trend and some consumers are being targeted with deals “too good to be true” for advent calendars.
Which? has encouraged potential buyers to be cautious of fraudsters offering substantial discounts. One cosmetics retailer, Space NK, urged customers to be aware of fake advertisements on social media platforms that falsely claim to sell its £250 advent calendar for as little as £28.99. Jini Sanassy of Space NK stated that fraudulent imitations of the website were being circulated, and the company had immediately informed social media platform owner Meta and initiated legal action.
On the fourth Friday of November, Black Friday is celebrated with holiday sales and discounts across the US, but now extends beyond the US being celebrated in many countries. In that context, there were several scam advertisements last year offering perfumer Jo Malone’s £350 advent calendar for only £30. Lisa Webb, Which? Consumer law expert, warned shoppers that the increasing popularity of luxury advent calendars provided fraudsters with greater opportunities to deceive consumers. She advised buyers to check the website’s URL carefully and to be wary of deals that appeared to be very low-priced. Webb added that any suspicious sites should be reported directly to the National Cyber Security Centre.
Luxury advent calendars are an increasingly popular product for consumers in search of unusual Christmas presents or indulgent treats for themselves.
