Kemi Badenoch, the new leader of the UK Conservative Party, has appointed Chris Philp as shadow home secretary, with Robert Jenrick as shadow justice secretary, Mel Stride as shadow chancellor, and Dame Priti Patel as shadow foreign secretary. Ed Argar has been made shadow health and social care secretary, while Claire Coutinho retains her role as shadow secretary of state for energy security and net zero, in addition to taking on the shadow equalities brief.
Philp, who supported Badenoch’s leadership campaign, was first elected as MP for Croydon South in 2015. He had previously set up businesses in finance and travel, became a junior minister in the Home Office under Rishi Sunak and had held other government roles. Meanwhile, Badenoch’s shadow cabinet heavily leans on those who supported her leadership campaign.
Although nine of the new shadow cabinet members have been part of the real cabinet, Conservative MPs who backed Jenrick’s campaign say that the almost total absence of the right in the shadow cabinet will not help in reunification of the party. Some have called it “a recipe for yet more Conservative chaos”. Badenoch believes her new shadow cabinet “draws on the talents of people from across the Conservative Party, based on meritocracy and with a breadth of experience and perspective”.
Badenoch hoped to give jobs to all former leadership contenders, but James Cleverly, who came third, ruled himself out before the results were announced on Saturday. Tom Tugendhat, who came fourth, is not listed as a member of Badenoch’s top team. By giving jobs to some of her former rivals in the Tory leadership race and figures from different wings of the party, Badenoch will be hoping to unify the Conservatives after their worst-ever general election defeat in July.
Other roles announced include: James Cartlidge as shadow defence secretary, Andrew Griffith as shadow business secretary, Helen Whately as shadow work and pensions secretary, Kevin Hollinrake as shadow levelling up, housing and communities secretary, and Victoria Atkins as shadow environment, food and rural affairs secretary. Former Chief Secretary to the Treasury Laura Trott had already been appointed as shadow education secretary, with Neil O’Brien as shadow education minister.
