Man's bond with orphaned otter becomes a movie hit

In Shetland, the arrival of an orphaned otter cub changed the lives of Billy and Susan Mail. One day in March 2021, Billy noticed the emaciated animal, who he would later name Molly, cracking crabs near his house. The couple fed the animal and kept her as part of their family.

Billy says caring for Molly helped him rediscover joy after he had lost his parents. The arrival of the animal was “a breath of fresh air” for the couple, who had recently moved back to Shetland and were also dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Molly the otter became well-known, inspiring filmmaker Charlie Hamilton-James to create a documentary about their friendship. The documentary, titled “Billy and Molly: An Otter Love Story,” premiered at the South by Southwest festival in Texas in March 2021.

Billy eventually stopped feeding Molly to give her the opportunity to learn to fend for herself. She stopped visiting the couple’s garden but was eventually seen on film with her own cub. Billy and Susan were happy to see that the otter was thriving and had become a mother.

Susan says Molly taught her compassion, while Billy regained his love for nature by helping the animal to grow. “Billy and Molly: An Otter Love Story” is now available to stream on Disney+
