During a visit to a township outside Cape Town, Prince William joined in a rugby training session with legends of the sport. The visit was organised by the Atlas Charity, which serves as a safe haven for schoolchildren and unites communities in challenging areas in South Africa. The prince was shown around by some of the country’s well-known rugby players, including former Springboks Joel Stransky and Percy Montgomery.
Tom Solimi, an aspiring rugby player from Ocean View Secondary School, was one of several young players who tried their luck and had the opportunity to tackle the prince. “It was just a game, it was just a bit of rugby,” he said. Later on, the prince also met with 120 young people from across Africa and South East Asia who are part of the Earthshot Climate Leaders Youth Programme, which supports eco-friendly innovations from around the world.
Prince William co-founded The Earthshot Prize, which will be presented at a ceremony in Cape Town on Wednesday night. Five winners will receive £1m to help tackle the climate crisis in the areas of energy, nature, air pollution, and waste. The prince, who will wear sustainable clothing during his time in Cape Town, encouraged the young people attending the programme and told them they are creating solutions and a better life for all of us.
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall also visited South Africa as part of their tour in November 2019. In keeping with The Prince of Wales’s long-standing interest in environmental sustainability, they both also visited a beach in Cape Town, where they were shown the litter and plastics that wash up from the sea. Charles took to a makeshift stage, where he announced six eco-friendly initiatives by major companies, including Sky and Coca-Cola, designed to reduce waste and help combat climate change
