Police hunt escaped 'pitbull-type' dog in Shepeau Stow

A warning has been issued by Lincolnshire Police regarding a missing pitbull-type dog. The force has cautioned the public not to approach the animal as they are unsure of its temperament. Officers have been searching for the dog since it was reported missing on Monday morning in Shepeau Stow, near Spalding. Instead of approaching the dog if sighted, members of the public should call the police.

According to the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, pitbull terriers are a banned breed. Other prohibited breeds include the XL bully, the Japanese Tosa, the Dogo Argentino, and the Fila Brazileiro. The enforcement of this legislation gives the police the power to take action against the ownership, breeding, or sale of banned dogs. Punishments for breaking the measures include a £5,000 fine and a six-month prison sentence.

Last year, there were two deaths resulting from dog attacks in the UK, with both victims being women aged 85 and 61.

To prevent dangerous dog attacks and to ensure public safety, it is crucial to follow responsible ownership practices. This includes teaching dogs basic obedience skills, keeping them on a lead in public areas, and adequately socialising them. In addition, it is paramount to adhere to legislation regarding dog breeds to reduce the risk of harm to both animals and humans
