The bodies of a missing British couple have been found in their car, following flash flooding in Valencia, Spain. Don Turner, 78, and Terry Turner, 74, had not been seen since heavy downpours hit the region on Tuesday. Their daughter, Ruth O’Loughlin, confirmed their deaths. She said her parents had moved to Spain about ten years ago because they “always wanted to live in the sunshine”. It is not yet known how they died.
Terry Turner had told friends that they were going to buy gas. She spoke to Ruth the day before the flooding. When friends checked on the Turners later in the day, they found their pets but no occupants. Ms. O’Loughlin says that her parents were together when they were found. There have been over 200 deaths in the recent flooding and at least one other man from the UK lost his life.
Anger has risen due to the perceived lack of warning and support from Spanish authorities following the flooding. Protesters threw mud and other objects at King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia as the royal couple walked through Paiporta, a flooded town in Valencia. Meanwhile, emergency workers in Valencia continue to search underground car parks and tunnels for survivors.
This tragedy is a reminder of the devastating and unpredictable power of nature. It’s important for authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safety of local residents during severe weather events. Our thoughts go out to the families and friends of those affected by this tragedy
