A bus struck and killed a 74-year-old man in Edinburgh’s busy Cowgate area on Saturday night at approximately 7:25 p.m. After the incident, several roads were closed, and people in pubs were asked to leave the area. Footage and images, exposing the victim’s catastrophic injuries, quickly circulated on social media. The police urged the public to refrain from sharing them.
BBC Scotland News reporter James Delaney, who was near the site, said there was a considerable police cordon set up quickly. Inside were two forensic tents, which were about 100 meters apart. He observed that the Cowgate usually had a vibrant nightlife on Saturdays, but the bars and pubs inside the cordoned region were shut. There were roughly a dozen men in white forensic suits and a few guys in suits too, who were probably detectives.
The police erected sheets on the South Bridge to screen off the Cowgate area below. Officer Trisha Clark, the local area commander, invited anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward and speak with the investigators. The police cordons in the area have now been lifted, and people paid their respects by placing a bunch of flowers at the scene.
Clark also expressed concern over the images and videos that are being circulated on social media, causing distress to the victim’s family. She asked the people to report them to the relevant social media platform to prevent further circulation. Clark further clarified that this was an isolated incident and that there was no risk to the wider public
